Revamping the Ranks
In a bold move marking the end of the 2018 season, AFC Leopards, a prominent force in the Kenyan Premier League, is gearing up to streamline their squad, resulting in the departure of 11 players. This significant change was confirmed by the club's Secretary General, revealing a strategic shift in the team’s structure.
Having experienced a noticeable slip from third to sixth place in the league, coupled with a tumultuous change in leadership with Argentinian coach Rodolfo Zapata making way for his assistant Tom Juma, AFC Leopards is in the midst of transformation. The upcoming season of 2018-2019 is poised to see a restructured and revitalized team, starting with a trim in the player roster.
Currently boasting a squad of 31, the Secretary General, Oscar Igaida, disclosed plans to reduce this number to a more manageable and effective 25 players for the next season. "We are embarking on a journey of change,” Igaida shared with KweséESPN. "Our goal is to eliminate any excess in our squad and focus on nurturing a team that adds value and strength to our side."
He further unveiled the club’s recruitment strategy, stating, "This season, our approach to signings will be measured, with only five new players joining our ranks. This decision is based on the comprehensive report from our previous coach, Rodolfo, ensuring that our choices are well-informed."
As a result, the Leopards will bid farewell to 11 of their current players. "Some will see their contracts naturally come to an end, while others will be free to engage with new clubs, as they do not feature in our future plans," Igaida elaborated.
With a storied history that includes 13 Kenyan titles, AFC Leopards stands as the nation’s second-most successful team, and this decisive overhaul signifies a commitment to maintaining and enhancing that legacy in the seasons to come.
